October in America! We’re in it! Crunchy leaves and cool breezes and all the things fall means. But most importantly, pumpkins. Large and small, painted and carved, these orange spheres decorate every doorstep in town. Some are a bit moldy by now in the unusually late-seasoned Austin heat, but the locals know not to buy theirs until just a week before the big day. Well, we’re down to the 4-day countdown, folks, so all hands on deck!
Unfortunately, I have to admit: I’ve yet to carve a pumpkin this year. And yet to figure out a Halloween costume as well. I can’t say I’ve put much thought into it, but I did manage to rummage through an old costume bin and came across a cat-head hat with ears that hang down as a scarf/pockets (whichever you prefer I guess). This feels like a bit of a cop-out to say the least, but we’ll see if I can make it into something worthy of the big day.
And then there’s the Halloween costume contest at work this Friday. My teammates decided dressing up as characters from the Magic School Bus was a good idea. I haven’t given a second of thought to Ms. Fizzle and her students in at least 2 decades, and I’m far from knowing all the classmates’ names as my colleagues seem to. But I’ll gladly dress up as one of the curious kids and paint a bus-shaped piece of cardboard yellow to carry along next to us for the day. Maybe we’ll even win the coveted $50 Amazon gift card. We should at least have a shot at it, right?
