My training medley

One of my favorite things about moving to a new city is discovering different work-out places. Being out of the U.S for awhile, there are a few new training trends that seem to have developed in my absence – SoulCycle, barreCity Surf, to name a few. And now I get to try them all out 🙂

This is all very exciting, largely due to the fact that almost every studio/gym/facility has some serious new member discounts. They’re a great incentive to bring in newbies, especially for someone job hunting (like me): loads of time + not much cash flow = thank you very much to unlimited yoga for free for a week!

Since arriving in Austin almost 4 months ago, I’ve completed almost 4 work-out newbie deals, each with its pros and cons. I can’t say I loved them all, but here are a few thoughts on each one:

  1. Yoga Vida – heated vinyasa power flow yoga in what claims to be Austin’s first hot yoga studio (est. 1999); amazing yoga, a true detox, great instructors; I learned to do a headstand!; owner is quirky but entertaining, even when he has yogis make wild animal noises; $40 for your first month of unlimited yoga
  2. pure barre – what seems to have become a cult training method, the motto of this work-out is “small moves, big changes” – and big changes I did see – in my arms, which is always a challenge; pilates-esque with some standing series using a ballet barre, your muscles will burn so intensely you’ll think you can’t go any longer; $100 for your first month of unlimited classes
  3. Fusion Indoor Cycling – the best cycling class I’ve ever taken (although I haven’t been to many); great music and instructors; you can see what gear you’re riding on – and what gear you’re aiming for – so you can match up to everyone else in the class; first 21 days are FREE
  4. CorePower Yoga – I was a bit hesitant with this nation-wide chain, but it seems to be growing for a reason – truly amazing, sweaty yoga; both beginner and advanced classes, with weights and without; fun music, and classes have been different every time; first 7 days are FREE

There are literally hundreds of different training places in Austin – and more opening all the time. I’ll see what I end up with as my routine, but for now, I’m enjoying my taste testing of everything. Although ClassPass sounds like another good option – has anybody tried it?
